MBNA is a financial institution that’s focused exclusively on credit cards, which might be why MBNA credit cards are among the best offered in Canada. They issue Mastercards and Visas, including cards that offer low or no annual fees, high rewards and loyalty points, or that support your favourite Canadian school, sports team, or charitable donations. Here are our top-rated MBNA credit cards.

Travel rewards credit cards are always popular, but the MBNA Best Western Rewards is one of the best, especially for frequent travellers. With this card, you’ll earn 5 Best Western Rewards (BWR) points for every $1 you spend at a Best Western property and 1 BWR point per $1 spent elsewhere, making it easy to earn free stays. You’ll also get a 20000-point welcome bonus, and you’ll be fast-tracked to Gold Elite Status to earn more points after your first eligible transaction. If you spend at least $10,000 in your first year of card membership, you’ll be upgraded to Diamond Elite status.

Along with great travel rewards, you’ll also get rental car collision damage insurance, travel protection including Common Carrier Accidental Death & Dismemberment Benefits of up to $1,000,000, lost luggage insurance, and extended warranty and purchase protection. On top of this, there’s no annual fee for the Best Western Rewards card and interest is a standard 19.99% on purchases and 24.99% on cash advances.

MBNA travel rewards come quickly and easily via the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus card. These points can be redeemed for airfare and other travel-related goods like cruise packages and hotels, as well as for merchandise, gift cards, charitable donations, and even cash back. The card collects points at a base rate of 1 for every $1 spent in eligible purchases, and at an accelerated rate of 2 points per $1 spent on gas, grocery, and restaurant purchases. It’s important to note that there’s a $5,000 spending limit annually within each of those accelerated categories, after which the accelerated earn rate is reduced to the base rate of 1 point per $1 for the remainder of the year.

A generous bonus of 10000 MBNA Rewards points is offered to new customers who sign up (5,000 bonus points after your first eligible purchase and 5,000 bonus points once enrolled in e-statements). This, plus the absence of any annual fee and the inclusion of basic insurance and protective features makes the Rewards Platinum Plus card a great travel option for those loyal to MBNA.

Best MBNA Low Interest Credit Card

MBNA True Line MasterCardMBNA True Line® Gold Mastercard®

Eligibility Criteria:

There has been a tangible gap in the marketplace ever since MBNA discontinued its immensely popular Platinum Plus Mastercard, which was the only Canadian card to offer a 0.00% balance transfer deal. Now, MBNA’s True Line Gold Mastercard represents a revival of this lucrative promotion, but with a slight change that improves on the discontinued card. For 6 months, new cardholders who transfer a balance from another bank will pay 0% interest, but instead of raising this rate to 20%+ after the promotion ends (a hike which occurs with most balance transfer promos), the post-promotion balance transfer interest rate remains at a low 8.99%.

Though the card has a small annual fee of $39, the amount of money that an average cardholder will save with complete shelter from interest for 6 months is significant. Additionally, it’s a near guarantee that an 8.99% post-promotional rate is lower than what anyone with a balance is currently paying. The same 8.99% is also applied to purchases, which is great for those who plan on using the card to pay for goods and services after they’ve finished paying off their transferred balances.

Those who want to save on the often-exorbitant interest rates charged to outstanding credit card balances, but who also prefer a free card as opposed to paying an annual fee, will appreciate MBNA’s True Line card. Identical in many ways to its cousin the MBNA True Line Gold card, the two cards differ in their annual fee ($0 versus $39), the length of their 0% promotional interest rates on balance transfers, and their post-promotional interest rates. Instead of a $39 annual fee and 8.99% interest rate, the standard True Line card has no annual price tag and charges 12.99% interest on balance transfers and purchases after its 10-month 0% promotion is over. This 12.99% post-promotional interest rate is still likely half of what an average person pays on their outstanding balance.

Like with the Gold card, applicants should remember a few things about their potential balance transfer. They must transfer the balance within 90 days of opening their account, for one, and must also pay a 3% transfer fee. Missing a minimum payment runs the risk of being disqualified for the promotional interest rate, so it’s important to pay on time. Apply through the links on our site to qualify for the 0% interest promotion.

Best MBNA Cashback Credit Card

Those who favour the simple, direct savings provided by a cashback credit card will love the MBNA Smart Cash World Mastercard, which earns fast cash back on common purchases like gas and groceries. For their first 6 months with the card, cardholders will earn a bonus rate of 5% cash back in these purchase categories until they’ve spent $500 on them during the month, at which point the rate is reduced to 1% until the next month begins.

The standard post-promotional cashback rate is 2% for the life of the card on gas and groceries, though cardholders should be aware that the same $500 spending maximum applies here as well. After spending $500 on gas at 2% cash back, for example, the rate is then reduced to the 1% base rate that the card collects on every eligible purchase. Also keep in mind that there’s a minimum annual income requirement to be eligible for the MBNA Smart Cash World card of $60000 personally. The card carries an annual fee of $39 as well, which can be easily offset by its rapid collection of cash.

Some might have trouble reconciling an annual fee for the privilege of earning cash back. This is one reason why cashback cards that have no annual fee are in demand, and MBNA fans will find a solid option for this in the Smart Cash Platinum card. Slightly different than the Smart Cash World card, the Platinum version has no income requirement and no annual fee, but accordingly a lower all-purchases cashback rate of 0.5% instead of 1%. The same 5% cashback promotion for gas and groceries still applies, as does the $500 per month spending limit.

After the promotion ends the card offers 2% cash back on gas and groceries until spending in those categories reaches $500, just like the Smart Cash World Card, though that earn rate will then be downgraded to the lower 0.5% rate. We recommend cardholders pay $39 for the 1% rate instead of $0 for the 0.5% rate if they are likely to buy around $8000 worth of items per year that aren’t gas or groceries.

Lifelong bikers and Harley-Davidson aficionados will love the Harley-Davidson Mastercard. It lets you earn 1 Harley-Davidson™ Genuine Rewards point for every $2 you spend, plus one entry into the quarterly drawing to win a free Harley for every eligible purchase you make and the opportunity to redeem points for Harley Chrome cash that you can spend at Harley-Davidson retailers.

As well as Harley-Davidson points and perks, cardholders get rental car collision damage coverage, basic travel insurance that includes lost luggage assistance and lost document and ticket assistance, and extended warranty and purchase protection. Hi there.

I recently applied for an mbna mastercard best western and got approved for the best western one and recently received my credit card and. I realized I like the mbna true line is the one that I would prefer due to their 0% BT for 10 months. Is it bad to apply for this mbna true line right now or should I just wait it out

The GreedyRates Team says:

Hey Ingrid,

Your recent application and approval for the Best Western Mastercard by MBNA won’t heavily impact your ability to get approved for another MBNA card, including the popular True Line Mastercard with the 0.00% for 10 months balance transfer deal. You may even be able to call MBNA and do what’s called a “product switch” over the phone, where they transfer your credit limit to the True Line card. This will likely be easier if you haven’t already used the Best Western Mastercard, as it’ll have no balance and won’t have accrued any points yet.

If MBNA won’t help you do a product transfer, you can apply for the True Line Mastercard separately. Having an existing MBNA account is no barrier to getting another one. The only restriction you need to be aware of is that MBNA’s balance transfer deal doesn’t work with balances that originate from MBNA (or TD) itself. Plainly speaking, this means you may not transfer a balance from the MBNA Best Western card to the True Line card, if you want that 0.00% for 10 months deal.

Finally, if you’d prefer to close your Best Western card and just keep the True Line, this will dent your credit slightly in the short-term but won’t be too harmful over the long-term. We recommend doing this after getting ahold of the True Line card, accordingly. Best of luck and let us know if you need any further assistance.

Terry says:

I would like to see a review of the Alaska Airlines World Elite® Mastercard® credit card.

The GreedyRates Team says:

Hey Terry,

No problem! Though we haven’t done enough due diligence or fine-print dissection to warrant a full review yet, we can certainly go over its main features and try to compare it to cards we know more about. The Alaska Airlines World Elite card looks to offer 30,000 bonus miles and a companion fare if you spent at least $1,000 in the first 90 days of your account opening. Afterwards, it offers complimentary checked bags (probably only on Alaska Airlines flights), 3 miles per $1 on travel from Alaska Airlines, and then 1 point per $1 spent elsewhere. There’s a $99 annual fee.

We can already tell that the card will be great for you, but only if you find yourself flying with Alaska Airlines frequently. The WestJet World Elite card from RBC is very similar (no surprises as it’s also an airline-branded World Elite card), offering $250 in travel redemption and free bags for cardholders as well. However, it is very notable that the WestJet card’s bonus does not require a minimum spend. For this reason, the annual fee is $20 higher, but also because it provides extra value with the same annual companion voucher and a higher rate of rewards on everyday purchases (1.50%). For most traveller purposes the WestJet card will win every time, unless flying with Alaska Air is a must.

Steve says:

What happened to the MBNA World Elite card?

The GreedyRates Team says:

Hi Steve,

Thanks for asking after the MBNA Rewards World Elite card. Unfortunately, MBNA is making some sweeping changes to the card right now that will take place over the next few months. For example, from now until the end of January 2019, the minimum number of MBNA Rewards you can redeem is being reduced to 1,000 from 5,000. This is in anticipation of all the adjustments being made to the card’s perks.

In its new state, you’ll still earn 2.00% in rewards if you redeem them for actual rewards (travel, merchandise, gift cards etc.). However, they’ve made the redemption rate less valuable when you use your rewards to get a cash credit. Whereas it used to be 100 points was the equivalent of $1, it’s now 120 points. You’ll also see the annual fee rise from $89 to $120, which further impacts the value proposition of the card.
The scheduled changes are just some among many for MBNA’s credit card lineup, which has seen a decent amount of tumult in the last months after the discontinuation of their Platinum Plus card, and the introduction of the True Line Gold and True Line cards to replace it. For now, we’d consider the Rogers World Elite card as a better alternative to the MBNA Rewards World Elite, as it offers similar value-per-dollar in Canada (1.75% on all purchases), plus 4.00% back when you use it with foreign currencies (buying abroad or from international merchants online).
